Ben Taranto & Cherie Winter's URBAN MATTER draws on the abstractions surrounding built and natural environments. Autumn leaves are seasonally collected and disposed of, seen as unsightly bio foul detrimental to both urban waterway constructions and tram activity. Using these urban tree leaves as matter, this work returns them to their original urban environment whilst completely filling the gallery's window spaces. The artists see this action as one that explores notions of waste material and urban maintenance.

Mattress of Pagan Horror is an experimental music group formed by the Brothers Kavanagh in mid 2010 to explore their joint interest in free and improvised music. Utilising non-conventional instrumentation, the duo creates spontaneous sound scapes with the emphasis being on interaction and dynamic and textural interest. Recently the duo have been focusing on the introduction of thematic ideas into their compositions as a way of creating stepping stone like melodic and rhythmic points amidst their improvisations.

‘While We Watch You Sleep’

DOUGLAS E POPE & CARA FOX

‘While We Watch You Sleep’ combines the writings of Cara Fox and photography of Douglas E Pope in a series focusing on sleep, vulnerability and trust. Through intimate extracts of that most vulnerable human state, sleep, the collection documents the subjects' nocturnal experiences, creating short stories around them.

Both the artists have approached this body of work with different processes. Cara has been going to friends and friends of friends’ houses to share their beds with them. Noting interesting habits and patterns in their nocturnal hours, she is experiencing a side of people that she would of never have previously known and writing prose about it.

Douglas on the other hand has opted to approach his works with stealth, asking the sleeper to leave a key out and a light on in their room before creeping into their abodes in the early hours of the morning and taking photos of them while they sleep. The result is a uniquely intimate collection of media.

The exhibition is a collection of photographs and writing as well as a self-published zine of the same content (in progress).

Over the next three weeks video artist, performers, puppeteers, dancers, actors, musicians and visual artists will embrace the studio as their rehearsal space in an attempt ...to perfect their practices.

window99 gallery sits amidst the commision flats, pubs, cafes, retail, craft/design stores and community centres of Fitzroy. For this month only the window boxes have been removed and the studio is bare. Kicking off on Saturday, the REhearse project is an exhibition that explores the idea of the artists' practice as a 'rehearsal'. Inside the window99 studio the artists will be influenced by the synergy of the surrounding urban landscape allowing the site to become material for the development of works to be created and performed within the space.

Video footage from each rehearsal will be broadcast on the REhearse project page with the schedule available at the start of each week. To view bios for all the artists involved see 'artist bios' on the REhearse site.

SMELL YOU LATER is a site-specific installation centred around the adolescent saying. Because of its childish nature this old ... adage is humorous, endearing and charming all at once. The absurdity of this installation seeks to bring the viewer the same sense of naivety that comes from children’s perceptions within the context of the everyday. That humour can exist in the banal and that novelty within inanity can be paramount.

The universe of Sue-Ching Lascelles is one which is both commonplace and out of place at the same time. She dreams like a juvenile delinquent of two separate worlds, a place where childhood obsessions are validated in the transition to adulthood. It’s a universe where make-and-do marry the outlines of reality and then smudges those outlines a little bit, making it hard to tell where the ordinary ends and the extraordinary begins.

PACO PARK attempts to re-create the aesthetics and branding of an imaginary fashion brand. It comprises a series of jackets (26 x 42cm) in riotous colours accompanied by a fashion brand logo, Paco Park. Paco Park invites audiences to question the distinction between art and fashion. Is window99 a store window or a gallery space? Are the jackets for sale, as fashion or as art?

AT ROLLERDOOR PERFORMANCE SPACE

MAKA KHAN is a new instrumental three piece starting to make in roads into the Melbourne improvised and experimental music scene. The group comprising MARCOS VILLALTA (guitar/effects), PARIS FAVILLA (Alto saxophone) and SARAH GALDES (drums) all finished their improvisation degrees at the VCA at the end of 2010 and since then have been involved in a wide variety of music from experimental duos to folk, gypsy, funk, neo-soul and straight ahead Jazz. In Maka Khan they explore the baseless trio format with dynamic, textural and wide ranging original compositions and thoughtful reworkings of jazz standards from the past and present.

ART FOR PALMER STREET is a project centered around the huge blank wall of the Brotherhood of St Laurence on the corner of Brunswick and Palmer Streets in Fitzroy. The wall is currently covered in posters and tags from late night wanderers. Be the Artist to make this eyesore a promoter for the arts and your practice!

This highly visible wall can be seen by tram sitters, riders, drivers and walkers up and down Brunswick Street as well as by the traffic down Palmer Street. The wall is 12metres (high) by 4.5metres (wide). The artist will benefit from the exposure as well as directly from the commission we raise through Pozible. Check the profile here POZIBLE!

THE BROTHERHOOD

Opposite WINDOW99 is The Brotherhood of St Laurence. "The Brotherhood works not just to alleviate poverty but to prevent it". With the Fitzroy office specifically aiming to "strengthen the capacity of new and emerging communities to become active participants in the social and economic life of Australia". INVOLVEMENT worth $1,000

As this is a large project in partnership with the Brotherhood there are a few steps required to be selected as the artist. First we would love to receive an Expression of Interest (stating info below), we will then select 2-3 artist who will come along to a briefing at the Brotherhood where a more detailed description of the work will be discussed. The artist will then submit a final description and illustration of the artwork along with equipment requirements. The final artist and work will then be selected and the FUN can begin!

The project will cover costs of paint and equipment and deal with all permits needed for the completion of the work. The artist will then receive the final commission for the project, which is aimed at being $1,000.

Project paint date is aimed at taking place during the month of November 2011 with the specific date to be discussed and confirmed with The Brotherhood and the artist.

Paris Hilton in Faux Fur is a work embracing and reflecting upon a sub culture of social disease addicts. Addicts based on being anarchistic within social constraints, obtaining luxury without understanding the lifestyle, and counseling their admirers with homogeneous gratitude and empathy. Their first words were; marketing, PR and exponential.

Ramona Telecican's practice emerges from within three frameworks: form. repetition. delicacy. As a professional Stylist and Creative Producer, Ramona's work as an Artist finds her exploring the curiosities and intricacies of how aesthetics effect us when the power of context is in her hands.

Can you pass me something please is a collaboration between Melbourne Artists Veronica Cust and Benjamin Woods. This work details a specific mode of physical production, closely associated with simple everyday tasks of transferring. The performance led investigation details the movement of the two artists in uniform as they enact actions of throwing, stacking and catching. Through “acting out” this simple scripted task the artists not only engage with the physicality of the act itself, but also with the absurdity of the task when it is going towards no end.

WINDOW99 is seeking artists, musicians, dancers and performers for a unique SEPTEMBER EXHIBITION. For the month of September window99 will remove the window boxes to reveal the studio space behind. This space will then be open for artists, musician, dancers, performers and anyone else who would like to 'rehearse' their practice throughout the month, at any time, on any day, for as long as they like. This will create an ongoing performative work that will be witnessed by both artistic and public audiences alike.

Rehearsal dates are Saturday the 10th of September till October 1st.

REhearse BRIEF

As history does inadvertently repeat itself, we familiarise ourselves with a cycle of behaviors and attitudes of our predecessors, contemporaries, and our current selves, which influence our present and future. This process is likened to a ‘rehearsal’ where we take on a ‘role’ or ‘persona’ to enact a ‘performance’ in the civic space.

The project will explore the idea of ‘rehearsal’ and how this can be influential on artistic practice. In this instance, window99 will become a ‘rehearsal’ space in which the synergy between the surrounding urban landscape, the artist and the site becomes material for the development of works to be created and presented on-site.

OUTLINE

Artists are invited to present an act for rehearsal in the studio space, which for the month of September will be revealed through the removal of the window boxes that make up window99. The artists will then use the exposed studio as a 'rehearsal' space to enact and reenact their practice. This rehearsal process does not need to take the form of an object, although it can, but simply can be an act or movement repeated in the attempt to perfect the practice.
The artist fee if according to how many days/hours the artist would like to ‘rehearse’ at a rate of 25/day.

PROPOSALS

Due Friday July 8th. More information can be found at the blogspot but please do not hesitate to call Marie (0403 668 237) before you submit your proposal to discuss any ideas, questions or to set up a time to see the space.

CLAIRE PENDRIGH & MICHELE GRIMSTON

The Beetle and the Butterfly explores the relationships between humans and their environments in quirky, playful and sometimes mischievous ways. Both artists are interested in creating new dynamics between everyday objects and people through traces left behind as people transition between ecological and engineered environments. The collaborative process the artists have undertaken in the making of this body of work is integral to the exploration of how people understand their surroundings and each other. Conversely, it also examines how the environment reacts to constant manipulation by human hands.

AT ROLLERDOOR PERFORMANCE SPACE

DOMINIC KAVANAGH explores the aesthetic and sonic world of ruination, evoking various sensations by appropriating materials sourced from the urban wilderness of the discarded object. This is achieved through a chain of FX pedals, loopers and synths. With the addition of modified vocals, Dominic seeks to complement and embellish on a layered cacophony of sound and texture.

TIM FARRELL works with several homemade instruments, utilizing live processing, feedback and light to explore improvisation through unexpected sounds and hardware crashes. Tim is interested in using his own body as the circuit conductor with his latest creations a hacked Korg monotron and the fluoroscent-light-magnetic-interference-thingy.

if i tell you i love you can i borrow that dress is a response to the practice of cultural appropriation within the fashion industry and the popularity of 'tribal' or 'ethnic' aesthetics labels that homogenise diverse cultural identities into an exotic other. These culture's, that are still to this day suffering the effects of systemic oppression by western colonialism, have their complex visual identities simplified into aesthetic curios of 'primitive or native' cultures [via inspiration], ready to be accessorised for that authentic native look.

Stick instincts will take up a studio in the installation space of window99 for the duration of April as part of Benjamin Woods’ Project for the Rights of Matter.

In his statement on Honesty, Wood’s notes, ‘this ongoing project tries to give matter a chance to be in-itself by attributing matter rights. It becomes problematic for a materiality-based practice when we notice matter could be deceiving us.’

Benjamin Woods works across action, documentation, writing, publication-making and process-based platforms. All of his research takes place within an expandable field of sculpture, concerned with matter, the body, and time. Benjamin is currently undertaking masters of research at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne.

During the opening night Kiera Brew Kurec will perform her two-hour durational piece, asking the audience to Give Me a Shot in a game of Russian roulette involving vodka and a cap gun.

Kiera Brew Kurec has performed her works in numerous galleries across Melbourne and Berlin and has just completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Honours at Victorian College of the Arts.

Project for the Rights of Matter opens at window99 alongside Give Me a Shot at Rollerdoor Performance Space on Saturday the 9^th of April from 6pm. The exhibition runs till the 7^th of May. Window 99 is located at 99 Brunswick St, Fitzroy, one block North of Gertrude St.

a note on honesty:

Allow me to disregard my materiality-based practice for one project. Honesty between you and me - while an intrinsically human capacity - could well be a breath of fresh air for a post-modern irony. Honesty has no method, no production, no proposition and no task for post-modernism to deny, and when it is so, we just seem to know. You cannot approach honesty with a 'method of honesty' because that would be contrived. At the same time, you cannot expect honesty of things. Therefore when we take on honesty as an idea for change/production, it is not by way of tactics or a conscious effort to move away from cynicism, but is simply there by way of its power as a human-generated non-human thing. This ongoing project tries to give matter a chance to be in-itself by attributing matter rights. It becomes problematic for materiality-based practice when we notice matter could be deceiving us.

Burn Archetype is an installation that appropriates a particular agent of Ruination. An unlikely group of hapless and discarded materials find themselves plucked from their suburban surrounds. Modified and reassigned within the realms of an assemblage sculpture, they are further united when thrown into the flames of a fire. The remains of these once prosaic objects presently occupy the white interior of window99’s art space, where one can delight in their charred, sublime condition.

Llawella chose to recreate a Venetian Blind for its domestic relevance and the implications behind obscuring ones view through a window. The blinds are made by hand sewing architectural tracing paper together with polyester sewing thread. Together the process and quality of the medium transformed the blinds into something more. Upon hanging the blinds, the materials collapsed and distorted, creating abstractions within the structure.

Mind the fence, it’s freshly painted is a still image of a moment when Marie and Leo decided to reclaim their front stoop. Their stoop is a hive of activity, frequented often by locals who can been seen drinking, talking and arguing their way through their days as well as the odd indiscriminate tagger who sees the front door as a good place to write their initials. They built a fence and installed it around their stoop. Unfortunately their effort to reclaim their territory is bound for failure, as they are unable to attach the fence to the pavement of the busy street.

'Suburbia: A Group Show'

For many of us suburbia will drag a memory from the depths of our consciousness and throw it into the spotlight. From childhood memories to thoughts of family living in the suburbs, maybe even something as simple as images from films and photographs. For just one word, suburbia evokes so much.

'Suburbia: A Group Show' brings together artists of photography, sculpture, performance art and spoken word poetry to create an exhibition that shares memories and induces many more.

In bringing together this show Marie Schoenmaker of window99 chose to invite three separate practicing artists from Melbourne, herself included, as well as Jessica O’Brien, a Melbourne based Curator, to form 'Suburbia: A Group Show'.

The show brings together works by Dominic Kavanagh, Llawella Lewis, and a collaborative work by Leo Kavanagh and Marie Schoenmaker. Added to this will be a debut performance of works by poets Niccolo Palandri and Brigitte Lewis. The opening night will also feature Patinka Cha Cha, an experimental pop group based in Melbourne.

The Brunswick St window, curated by Jessica O’Brien and entitled 'Still Lives: Impressions of Suburbia', is a multi media installation exploring the contradictions the ‘ideal’ environments of Suburbia creates. Artists include Amy-Jo Jory, Salote Tawale, Warwick Baker, Glenn Sloggett, Irene Finkelde, Jamine Fisher and Micha Couell.

'Suburbia: A Group Show' opens at window99 and Rollerdoor Performance Space on Saturday the 12th of March at 6pm, with the exhibition running till the 2nd of April.

Daniel Ali's Fragmented Moments: Forever Memories explores the physical process of seeing in fragments. Daniel plays on the idea that photographs are in themselves fragmented traces of the ‘real’. Daniel captures, either himself or, someone else as they photograph a moment. These captured fragments then become part of his own visual narrative, a narrative that can be altogether different from the original moment.

Rhiannon King's won't take much weight-I'm about to disappear is an exploration of the human body and its relationship to the cultural and social, engaging themes of alienation and fragmentation. Rhiannon's photographic series seeks to elevate the human body as a structural frame of reference, to consider the distinctions between the past as a structure and it's present intimations.

The visuals are punctuated by an enduring glimpse of an event or stage in ones life, of which the surrounding circumstances are not entirely revealed. These occurrences inscribe themselves in the human body, shaping and pervading it. There is a discernible tension created by isolating a particular dramatic moment, and the artist leaves the viewer to interpret the situation being captured.

Louise Francis’ installation entitled ‘PEEP’ draws the public into playing out their voyeuristic tendencies. A peephole runs from the glass of the window, accessible to the public, into window99’s studios behind, normally hidden from the public. Through three images in the second window space Francis then plays on the public’s anxieties of being at the receiving end of voyeurism as they are shown images of the outside world taken from within the enclosed studio, reminding us that there are two openings to a peephole.

The digital age has bred a plethora of persona. keep it real

the intersection between the idealised digital identities and private

insecurities we project via social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and the virtual world.

Keep it real manifests these identities through a grotesque distortion

of the artist's self portrait avartar created in the virtual world of

Second Life - challenged by real life performance video of the artist desperately trying to imitate her perfect virtual self.

The formula for McKenzie's work is only realized once the outcome is conceived. The end piece, informed by wordplay, causes the viewer to wonder whether the work contains any meaning at all.

We're on to round two...this month it's Natalie Holloway's sculpture called 'Marquee Sign' and photographs by David Payne called 'Still Noise'.

The opening is this Saturday the 10th of July. We'll again be having wonderful music played by wonderful people with drinks by donation and two amazing artworks to gawk at.

what else can we do other than what we are doing now

Bus held a forum last week to discuss the relevance of Artist Run Initiative's and whether they are the way to keep going with this rental crisis growing bigger and bigger. I think a discussion of 'what else can we do other than what we are doing now' needs to be on everyone's lips (constantly). As Marcus Westbury (Renew Newcastle) said, we need to not just think of other options within the same evolutionary path but go back to square one and consider new paths with completely different outcomes.
I am proposing one way of running a space for Artists to show their work but I want to hear what other ideas you have.
