if i tell you i love you can i borrow that dress is a response to the practice of cultural appropriation within the fashion industry and the popularity of 'tribal' or 'ethnic' aesthetics labels that homogenise diverse cultural identities into an exotic other. These culture's, that are still to this day suffering the effects of systemic oppression by western colonialism, have their complex visual identities simplified into aesthetic curios of 'primitive or native' cultures [via inspiration], ready to be accessorised for that authentic native look.
