Hollie Kelley, Claire Pendrigh & Michele Grimston
This month at WINDOW99 the artworks and performances provoke imagination and memories. Hollie Kelley's works reveal the honest and sometimes dark truths of life and memory, whilst Claire Pendrigh and Michele Grimston explore the dynamics between environments, objects and the manipulations of humans. Dominic Kavanagh draws on the aesthetics of real life, manipulating them into a sound scape that provokes sonic images from fans to... screaming cats whilst Tim Farrell rebuilds childhood toys into improvisational noise makers that at times have a mind of there own.
The show opens SATURDAY the 11th of JUNE from 6pm till 9pm.

A body of work that looks at youth, aging and the grey area that happens in between. 
DOMINIC KAVANAGH explores the aesthetic and sonic world of ruination, evoking various sensations by appropriating materials sourced from the urban wilderness of the discarded object. This is achieved through a chain of FX pedals, loopers and synths. With the addition of modified vocals, Dominic seeks to complement and embellish on a layered cacophony of sound and texture.
TIM FARRELL works with several homemade instruments, utilizing live processing, feedback and light to explore improvisation through unexpected sounds and hardware crashes. Tim is interested in using his own body as the circuit conductor with his latest creations a hacked Korg monotron and the fluoroscent-light-magnetic

The Beetle and the Butterfly explores the relationships between humans and their environments in quirky, playful and sometimes mischievous ways. Both artists are interested in creating new dynamics between everyday objects and people through traces left behind as people transition between ecological and engineered environments. The collaborative process the artists have undertaken in the making of this body of work is integral to the exploration of how people understand their surroundings and each other. Conversely, it also examines how the environment reacts to constant manipulation by human hands.

if i tell you i love you can i borrow that dress is a response to the practice of cultural appropriation within the fashion industry and the popularity of 'tribal' or 'ethnic' aesthetics labels that homogenise diverse cultural identities into an exotic other. These culture's, that are still to this day suffering the effects of systemic oppression by western colonialism, have their complex visual identities simplified into aesthetic curios of 'primitive or native' cultures [via inspiration], ready to be accessorised for that authentic native look.

Stick instincts will take up a studio in the installation space of window99 for the duration of April as part of Benjamin Woods’ Project for the Rights of Matter.
In his statement on Honesty, Wood’s notes, ‘this ongoing project tries to give matter a chance to be in-itself by attributing matter rights. It becomes problematic for a materiality-based practice when we notice matter could be deceiving us.’
Benjamin Woods works across action, documentation, writing, publication-making and process-based platforms. All of his research takes place within an expandable field of sculpture, concerned with matter, the body, and time. Benjamin is currently undertaking masters of research at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne.
During the opening night Kiera Brew Kurec will perform her two-hour durational piece, asking the audience to Give Me a Shot in a game of Russian roulette involving vodka and a cap gun.
Kiera Brew Kurec has performed her works in numerous galleries across Melbourne and Berlin and has just completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Honours at Victorian College of the Arts.
Project for the Rights of Matter opens at window99 alongside Give Me a Shot at Rollerdoor Performance Space on Saturday the 9th of April from 6pm. The exhibition runs till the 7th of May. Window 99 is located at 99 Brunswick St, Fitzroy, one block North of Gertrude St.

a note on honesty:
Allow me to disregard my materiality-based practice for one project. Honesty between you and me - while an intrinsically human capacity - could well be a breath of fresh air for a post-modern irony. Honesty has no method, no production, no proposition and no task for post-modernism to deny, and when it is so, we just seem to know. You cannot approach honesty with a 'method of honesty' because that would be contrived. At the same time, you cannot expect honesty of things. Therefore when we take on honesty as an idea for change/production, it is not by way of tactics or a conscious effort to move away from cynicism, but is simply there by way of its power as a human-generated non-human thing. This ongoing project tries to give matter a chance to be in-itself by attributing matter rights. It becomes problematic for materiality-based practice when we notice matter could be deceiving us.

Modified and reassigned within the realms of an assemblage sculpture, they are further united when thrown into the flames of a fire. The remains of these once prosaic objects presently occupy the white interior of window99’s art space, where one can delight in their charred, sublime condition.

Venetian Blinds

Llawella chose to recreate a Venetian Blind for its domestic relevance and the implications behind obscuring ones view through a window. The blinds are made by hand sewing architectural tracing paper together with polyester sewing thread. Together the process and quality of the medium transformed the blinds into something more. Upon hanging the blinds, the materials collapsed and distorted, creating abstractions within the structure.
